Unveiling the Maestro of Exotics: John Chitty, BVetMed CertZooMed MRCVS

John, a 1990 graduate of the Royal Veterinary College, has carved a niche as an expert in Zoological Medicine, earning the prestigious RCVS Advanced Practitioner status. His journey into the world of exotic animals began in 2000 when he obtained the RCVS Certificate in Zoological Medicine. Until recently, John was deeply involved in a bustling small animal and exotics practice in Andover, Hampshire, where his caseload was an impressive 100% avian, exotics, and small mammal cases.

A seasoned professional, John's expertise extends beyond conventional practice. He has been a consultant to various zoos and reintroduction projects, contributing significantly to the well-being of animals in diverse settings. Currently, he offers consultancy and advisory services for zoos, Local Authorities, and fellow veterinary professionals.

John's commitment to advancing knowledge in exotic animal care is evident in his role as the co-editor of three texts on avian medicine, one on rabbit surgery, and co-authorship of a comprehensive textbook on tortoise medicine. His wealth of knowledge extends to numerous book chapters and papers covering a wide range of species.

Adding to his accolades, John served as the President of the European Association of Avian Veterinarians from 2015 to 2017, leaving an indelible mark on the field. He is also an active member of the editorial board of the Journal of Exotic Pet Medicine, the Veterinary Record, and Veterinary Evidence.

In 2017-18, John ascended to the position of President of the British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA), where he continued his impactful contributions to the veterinary community. His dedication to the welfare of veterinarians is further evident through his role as a Trustee and Honorary Secretary of Vetlife, an organization providing support and assistance to veterinary professionals.
