Description

This session will focus on the initial assessment and treatment of patients that present as emergencies. Important information from physical examination, quick laboratory assessment tests, imaging, and monitoring will be covered enabling practitioners to provide appropriate supportive therapy even in the absence of a definitive diagnosis. Learning Objectives

  • Understand the importance of monitoring to determine treatment success.
  • Apply basic principles of emergency medical treatment aimed at maintaining oxygen delivery to organs pending definitive diagnosis and specific therapy.
  • Understand interpretation of laboratory parameters and imaging results as guides to making a rapid diagnosis.
  • Design an appropriate initial diagnostic workup that can be applied to any emergency patient.
  • Be able to accurately assess critical organ systems in emergency patients.
